Resolving Ambiguous Descriptions through Visual Information

چکیده
In the context of the SFB (special research group) 360 "Situated Artificial Comunicators" the project "Reference in Discourse" deals with the selection of a specific object from a visual scene in a natural language situation. In the SFB scenario, a robot is instructed by a person to construct a toy airplane. One of the prerequisites to solve this task is the identification of a described object in a given set of objects. The system OINC (Object Identification in Natural Communicators) aims at solving this problem in a psychologically adequate way. The difficulties occuring with incomplete and deviant descriptions correspond to data from psychological experiments with human subjects.

The primacy of negative interpretations when resolving the valence of ambiguous facial expressions.
Low-spatial-frequency (LSF) visual information is processed in an elemental fashion before a finer analysis of high-spatial-frequency information. Further, the amygdala is particularly responsive to LSF information contained within negative (e.g., fearful) facial expressions. In a separate line of research, it has been shown that surprised facial expressions are ambiguous in that they can be in...
متن کاملYoung Children’s Ability to Detect Ambiguity in Descriptions of location
Three experiments investigated 3to 5-year-aids’ ability to detect ambiguity in descriptions of location. In Experiments 1 and 2, children received ambiguous (e.g., “it’s in one of the bags”) and nonambiguous (e.g., “it’s in the bag by the chair”) descriptions. Fourand 5-year-olds’ search latencies were longer for ambiguous than for nonambiguous descriptions, but 3-year-olds’ latencies were long...
متن کاملBinocular Rivalry Requires Visual Attention
An interocular conflict arises when different images are presented to each eye at the same spatial location. The visual system resolves this conflict through binocular rivalry: observers consciously perceive spontaneous alternations between the two images. Visual attention is generally important for resolving competition between neural representations. However, given the seemingly spontaneous a...
متن کاملVisual Perception: Ambiguity Involving Parietal Cortex
Our brain is constantly interpreting ambiguous sensory input to deliver a stable perceptual representation of the environment. Two new studies suggest that superior parietal cortex plays a causal role in resolving perceptual ambiguity. Ironically, their results are somewhat ambiguous as to what that role might be.
متن کاملReinterpreting Visual Patterns in Mental Imagery
In a recent paper, Chambers and Reisberg (1985) showed that people cannot reverse classical ambiguous figures in imagery (such OS the Necker cube, duck/ rabbit, or Schroeder staircase). In three experiments, we refute one kind of explanation for this difficulty: that visual images da not contain information about the geometry of a shape necessary for reinterpreting it or that people connot appl...
